When Summer Feels Like Fall

Time to make elderberry syrup

There is a morning, usually in early September, when you step outside and the air has changed. The calendar still says summer. Your body says otherwise.

That morning is the signal. Elderberries are ripe and heavy on the bush, the first colds are a few weeks off, and there is just enough time to put up a season’s worth of syrup before anyone in the house starts sniffling. This episode is that afternoon at the stove.

Once the syrup is bottled, the work is taking it. Also see Plant Ally: Elder.

The plants keep better time than the calendar does. When the air turns, the work turns with it.
